2 metro Atlanta malls add gun-sniffing dogs for added security

0

They may look like a typical German Shepard walking through the mall with a security guard handling them, but if you are carrying a gun, be aware, the dogs may be looking for you. That’s the message Brookfield Properties, owners of both Cumberland and Perimeter Mall, is trying to get out to anyone who wants to bring a gun with them to either location.  Since late March, the K-9s have been on duty with their security partners taking part in what Brookfield says is a “proactive” measure designed to help shoppers feel safe while at the malls. Both malls have a strict policy prohibiting guns and consider anyone who carries one on the property as violating their “Code of Conduct.”

The area around Cumberland Mall has not been immune to gun issues recently.

In late March, four people were injured as two cars full of people had a shootout in the mall parking lot. One of the victims was a six year old.

Cobb County Police were able to track down and arrest the shooters.

There have also been shooting incidents at two different shopping plazas nearby over the past three weeks. Lenox Mall, which is owned by Simon Properties, has a metal detector at its entrances to keep customers from carrying a gun on the property after a rash of shooting and robbery incidents over the past year.
