Demonstrators gather at Capitol to protest new election and voting bills

0

Several civil and voting rights organizations rallied at the Georgia Capitol Thursday morning to protest election and voting bills that have recently been introduced by Republicans.

Channel 2′s Richard Elliot was at the Capitol, where a big House omnibus bill passed out of committee yesterday and there was a hearing on another one in the Senate Thursday morning.

Republicans said they are necessary for election integrity, but Democrats are accusing Republicans of using the bills for voter suppression after they lost the presidential election and both Georgia Senate seats.

Clayton County Democratic lawmaker Sandra Scott promised to fight those bills as protesters gathered Thursday morning.

“We will not stand for it, and we need to let them know that we are not going back,” Scott said. “We have the right and are going to vote. This is only energizing us to vote more.”

The rally started on the steps of the Capitol but troopers asked them to move across the street to Liberty Plaza.
