Atlanta’s Grady High School is one step away from becoming Midtown High School.
Midtown got the most votes in a student-only survey.
A school board naming committee promised to honor the results. In October, it voted to rename the school after Ida b. Wells, a Black journalist and activist in the late 1800s. But students and parents complained their voices were not heard on the name change.
In a meeting Tuesday night, the members expressed hope Wells’ name can find a home.
“If there is a space, Carrie, in the school for something to be named for Ida B. Wells and there is support with the students, I continue to suggest using some of these new spaces in the renovation to maybe accommodate that,” said Naming Committee member Courtney Smith.
The committee will make the Midtown High School recommendation to the full school board next Monday.
