LIFE IS A PRIZE, TO LIVE DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE ALIVE
Nicki Minaj made headlines last week after being announced as the headliner of Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah World Fest, which is a major win, considering Saudi Arabia is plagued with decades of restrictions on entertainment. She received tons of praise for being offered the opportunity as many considered she would be helping the progression of the nation but she also received a ton of backlash from human rights activists who begged her to reconsider given the country’s history of human rights violations.
In addition to pleading from her fans, the Human Rights Foundation issued a statement, calling for Nicki and other performers to pull out of the show. It looks like Nicki listened because she recently announced her decision to pull out of the concert because she wants to show support for women’s rights, gay rights and freedom of expression.
Nicki released a statement to the media that after careful reflection she has decided to no longer move forward with the concert and that while she does want nothing more than to bring her show to her fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating herself on the issues, she believes it’s more important for her to make clear her support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.
