Governor Brian Kemp began his "Wear a Mask" fly-ar Governor Brian Kemp began his "Wear a Mask" fly-around tour Wednesday morning ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend in hopes of encouraging Georgians to wear face coverings amid the coronavirus pandemic. "As you know this is a big weekend," the governor said at PDK airport Wednesday morning before departing on the tour. "I'm traveling the state to encourage all Georgians to do the right thing. Practice social distancing, wash your hands, and wear a mask." Gov. Kemp is headed to Columbus, Albany, and Valdosta on Wednesday and then he'll visit Dalton, Augusta, and Brunswick on Thursday. While on the tour, he'll be urging Georgians to follow the guidelines of health officials to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Many officials have touted face masks as people's first line of defense against COVID-19, but the debate over whether face masks should be required continues to heat up across the country as well as in Georgia. "Recent upticks throughout our country and state are clear reminders that we are not in the clear yet," Kemp said Wednesday morning. "We cannot grow complacent or weary." Savannah became Georgia's first city this week to require masks in public places, perhaps opening the gates for other cities to follow suit. If you’re heading to Hartsfield-Jackson Internat If you’re heading to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, you will want to pad in some extra time. Channel 2 Action News has confirmed that the Main TSA checkpoint was shut down for a deep cleaning after a TSA agent tested positive for COVID-19. Part of that checkpoint has since reopened and officials hope to have it fully reopened by tomorrow morning. Travelers caught in the long lines told Channel 2′s Matt Johnson that it took upwards of two hours to get through the screening checkpoint. Mark Howell with TSA said the check-point screener worked on Tuesday from 3:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. and the TSA was notified Wednesday of the positive test. Howell said the screener did come in contact with the public. The South checkpoint was already closed because of construction. As of Wednesday afternoon, only the International and North checkpoints were open at the airport. The wait time for the North checkpoint was running around 45-60 minutes. The international terminal was running less than 15 minutes. As part of the checkpoint reopened Wednesday evening, the long wait times got substantially shorter. #streetz945atl #hartsfieldjackson #atlanta #tsa

Months after reopening the state and weeks of the Months after reopening the state and weeks of the steady relaxing of coronavirus restrictions, Georgia just breezed past its previous record of new daily cases of COVID-19. On Wednesday, July 1, there were almost 3,000 new cases of coronavirus in the state, easily surpassing the previous records - set just at the beginning of this week. For Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, it's proof to her that the state is now paying the price for reopening too soon, she said. "We were one of the first states to open up, and so I think opening up so aggressively, we're now paying for it on the back-end," she said during an interview with MSNBC host Chris Hayes on Tuesday night. The mayor's comments came amid the "All In America" roundtable discussion with several of the country's mayors, hosted by the cable news network. Though the discussion mostly focused on the local and national effects of systemic racism and policing in America, Bottoms also took questions submitted by Atlantans, including one on voter suppression in the wake of Georgia's disappointing primary problems. But she also took time to address the raging coronavirus pandemic, too, especially the impact it has on Georgia's populous capitol city, which she helps govern. "When you look at the rates of asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure - especially in black and brown communities - it puts Atlanta at even higher risk," she said. Increasing levels of the virus and scenes of packed bars and public spaces in the city and beyond have health experts warning that the pandemic could soon be out of control and beyond reigning in - leading to a strain on hospitals and frontline workers. NBA commissioner Adam Silver acknowledging his pla NBA commissioner Adam Silver acknowledging his plan to continue the season in Orlando could hit a huge speed bump if players and staff continue to test positive for COVID. Of course, several NBA players have tested positive for coronavirus recently ... including DeAndre Jordan, Jabari Parker, 3 members of the NO Pelicans, several members of the Denver Nuggets organization and more. And, with concern growing, Silver addressed the issues Tuesday during an appearance on 'TIME 100 Talks' ... saying he's still "pretty confident" the season will happen, but nothing is certain. "We and our players together with their union, look at the data on a daily basis. If there were something to change that was outside of the scope of what we are playing for, certainly, we would revisit our plans." "We are testing daily," Silver continued ... "We haven't put a precise number on it, but if we were to see a large number of cases and see spread in our community, that would, of course, be a cause to stop as well." Silver says the league has a team of medical and science experts to help guide them through the pandemic plan. Still, Silver believes the bubble environment at Walt Disney World in Orlando will still be relatively safe. "I am absolutely convinced that it will be safer on this campus than off this campus because there aren't many situations that I am aware of where there is mass testing of asymptomatic employees," Silver said. "In some ways, this is maybe a model for how other industries can ultimately open. But, I am only going to say we will be responsible and watch what is happening, but the biggest indicator will be if we begin to see a spread in our community." The Grammy winner announced his new Bank Account At Home nationwide initiative on Wednesday. His efforts will include a partnership with Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms to provide free WiFi and tablets for undeserved students in the city. “I feel like it’s important more than ever to give our next generation the tools to succeed in life,” the rapper in a statement. 21 Savage said he wants to empower youth to manage their money. His program will work with mobile banking service provider Chime and EverFi, an education technology platform.
