Color of Change demands Amazon ends its relationship with ICE!!!
Amazon’s relationship with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is putting Black and immigrant communities in danger. Apparently, there has been a petition made to demand that Amazon end its relationship with ICE. Ralph Northam, Virginia Governor, signed a bill that gives Amazon $750 million in taxpayer dollars to build its second headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. At the same time, Amazon has been handing over its facial recognition technology, Rekognition, to ICE. Doing so allows ICE to effortlessly track and deport immigrants and also victimize Black communities.
Brandi Collins-Dexter, Senior Campaign Director at Color of Change says “We are at a crucial time in our country where white supremacy and hate groups are on the rise. By failing to remove hate merchandise, including Confederate, anti-Black, Nazi and fascist imagery from their platforms, Amazon is facilitating the spread of racial violence and hate across this country.”
ICE relies upon the technology used by companies like Amazon so that they can proceed with its battle with immigrants. The technologies used by these companies, such as Amazon, have the power to give ICE necessary information about immigrants and their families. Meanwhile, Amazon is still generating revenue.
Amazon’s facial recognition technology helps ICE’s deportation machine and it also puts the Black community at risk. Rekognition’s racist technology very frequently misidentifies Black people, increasing the number of dangerous interactions between Black people and law enforcement agents.
According to Color of Change, ‘A new report by the Action Center on Race and the Economy and the Partnership for Working Families found widespread racist hate content across Amazon’s website.’ Amazon should definitely reconsider what objects are being sold on their websites.
