First Prada, then Gucci, now Katy Perry!!!!
Many celebrities shamed Gucci for its Blackface apparel and some praised them. Recently, Katy Perry’s latest shoe line has made the same error. Katy’s recent shoe that was available at brick and mortar stores, Walmart and Dillard’s, has since been pulled off the shelves since one specific design coincides with Blackface.
The “Rue Face Slip-On Loafers” and the “Ora Face Block Heel Sandal” were both accessible in a beige and black design, and you can guess which design provoked the many disputes. The shoes are designed with a face that has two eyes, a nose and red lips on them. The black one was of course problematic. The singer, Masika Kalysha, said on social media … “So we just gonna let Katy Perry slide?”
Katy Perry and her brand management group, Global Brands Group, have reacted to the backlash, expressing that the shoe collection was released in 9 different colors and “envisioned as a nod to modern art and surrealism.”
They also stated, “I was saddened when it was brought to my attention that it was being compared to painful images reminiscent of blackface. Our intention was never to inflict any pain.”
