After months of racial tension and negativity, the City of Charlottesville is starting 2018 with new administration. On Tuesday, City Council member Nikuyah Walker is the city’s new mayor. This is a historic moment for the city because she is the first Black woman to ever hold the position in the city.

In August 2017 a White-nationalist rally turned extremely violent, sparking an explosion of outcries against racism in the U.S. Walker was among many who criticized how previous leaders handled the response to the rally.
Walker is one of several Black women who have been elected mayor across the United States, which is a step in the right direction for equality and representation for women in politics.
