WAS ‘BIRTH OF A NATION’ SET UP?
The Nat Turner biopic, ‘The Birth of a Nation’, was written, directed and starred Nate Parker came in no. 6 at the box office this week. The film brought in an estimated $7 million its opening weekend, being showed in 2,105 theaters.
The Nate Parker film was protested after it was revealed that he, along with his Penn State college roommate and writing partner Jean Celestin, had been accused of rape.
Purposely named, the original 1915 ‘Birth of a Nation’ film by D.W. Griffith shows the United States headed into chaos following the civil war with Black men portrayed as sexually aggressive monsters unable to control themselves around white women.
